Structure and Specifications


The Mode Locked Yb Fiber Laser Kit includes the followings.

  • a set of optical parts
  • a semiconductor laser (LD) (※ available also without LD)
  • an easy assembly manual


This kit works on NPR (Nonlinear Polarization Rotation) as a principle of mode locking.
This kit is made with optical elements selected so that every optical parts are aligned (optical axis) with the laser beam going there through. The mode locking will work as early as few hours after you have received it.

Development story

It was developed by new students from university laboratories and companies because they thought it would be interesting to have a toy that could learn “fiber laser”, “mode synchronization”, and “femtosecond laser” as if they were plastic models.「Analog electronic circuit production kit that makes learning the basics of electricity fun: Gakken Electronic Block」It is a “laser oscillator manufacturing kit” that you can learn the basics of laser in a fun way. We hope that this experimental kit can contribute to “development of ultra-short pulse laser field”, “development of laser industry” and “development of optical industry”.


  • 2004 Since fiber lasers were mainly in the 1.5um wavelength band, which is an optical communication band, there were few commercially available optical elements for fiber lasers in the 1.0um wavelength band. It was very difficult to prepare Yb-doped fibers, isolators, and fiber collimators, and I was groping for what to use and what to use.Although it was announced at the American academic conference,but not yet announced at the Japanese academic conference, it took about one year to succeed in mode-locked fiber laser oscillation in the wavelength 1.0 um band. I remember being very happy when mode synchronization was first applied.
  • 2011 In collaboration with a trading company, we succeeded in developing the “mode-locked Yb fiber laser experiment kit”. At that time, mode-locked Yb fiber products were very expensive, at the 10 million yen class. In order to expand the market, we set the price of the experimental kit to approx. 1 million yen.
  • End of March 2014 We delivered not only to RIKEN, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, and other independent administrative agencies, to universities such as the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University, but also to large number of customers from large companies to venture companies. As far as we know, the purchaser’s mode synchronization achievement rate is 100%.
  • End of January 2016 So far, 30 femtosecond lasers (mode-locked fiber laser kits) have been introduced to the market, recently one per month. We have a wide variety of applications, and we feel that we are contributing to the expansion of the femtosecond laser market.

Soliton pulse mode synchronization / Stretch pulse mode synchronization

Soliton pulse mode locking occurs when the total dispersion in the resonator is negative (abnormal dispersion).Optical soliton effect(pulse spread due to dispersion effect and pulse compression due to self-phase modulation (SPM) balance each other) creates a waveform of the sech2 function.Therefore, the pulse quality is good, but the pulse energy is limited.
Stretch pulse mode locking occurs when the total dispersion in the resonator is positive (normal dispersion). The pulse energy is not limited and high output is possible, but the feature is that the pedestal component is likely to remain after pulse compression.
